Those of you that asked more about Moxie Soda, here's a little more about it...

"Moxie was created in 1876 by Dr. Augustin Thompson, formerly of Union, Maine, while he was employed by the Ayer Drug Company in Lowell, Massachusetts. Moxie was first marketed as a patent medicine in Massachussetts, under the product name “Moxie Nerve Food." Moxie was said to cure ailments ranging from softening of the brain to “loss of manhood.” In 1884, it was sold in carbonated form and merchandised as an invigorating drink, which claimed to endow the drinker with “spunk”.

In the early phase of its life as a recreational soft drink, Moxie is said to have been kept handy by bartenders to give to customers who were too drunk to be given any more alcohol. This story may be apocryphal, however, inspired by Moxie's noted aftertaste, which many people find unpleasantly strong.

The popularity of Moxie produced popular advertising jingles, such as “Just Make It Moxie for Mine”, and President Calvin Coolidge was known to have favored the drink. Boston Red Socks slugger Ted Williams endorsed Moxie. Author E B White, an adopted Mainer and noted Moxie fan, once wrote “Moxie contains gentian root, which is the path to the good life.”

One of the key ingredients of Moxie is “Gentian Root Extractives”, which probably contributes noticeably to its unique flavor. For those without access to Moxie, the flavor can be approximated (and adjusted to taste) by adding Angostura bitters to root beer, or by mixing Campari with Coca-Cola. Its bitter taste is also reminiscent of Italian chinotto soda.

In other news... Mum is looking at houses! Can you believe it, we might have our very own yard someday... and she even said we'd get our own room! How cool is that?!

  1. Wow! You guys have more snow than we do! Usually we at least have that much by this time of year, but we're a little low on the white stuff so far.

Enjoy the snow zoomies for us!

  2. Look at all that snow! And your videos are great! We love snow too. I find it delicious to eat and dig up. What was in the bush...something good I bet. It is raining here in Oregon...sigh. Everything else is fine though, I even get out of my cage most of the time now. Could you send us some snow please?

  3. Girls! You have snow? Where are you? Did you move to Alaska? I am counting the days until it snows here, but we're far from what you have. I'm a wee bit jealous.

  8. We are so jealous of your snow. We haven't had proper snow for years. There's snow further north this weekend, but we're too too close to the coast, I think. Love those pics. Whimper.

Thanks for the info on the Moxie drink. Sounds similar to how coke started out.
